More Americans paying bills online

eMarketer reports that 13 percent of American consumers are paying bills online this year, up from two percent in 1998.

According to TowerGroup the number of consumers viewing bills via the Net has also risen over the same period from one percent in 1998 to 20 percent in 2002.

The research company estimates that 46 percent of US households pay between two and five bills per month online. However, just 16 percent pay six or more bills, while 30 percent pay just one bill via the Net.

Approximately 55 percent of consumers pay their bills through online banks or credit unions. This compares with 39 percent who pay directly at billers? sites, and nine percent who pay thought portals.
