De veranderingen op Facebook die je als marketeer niet mag missen
De belangrijkste wijzigingen in de news feed van Facebook
Donderdag 7 maart heeft Facebook een aantal ingrijpende veranderingen in de news feed-sectie aangekondigd. We zetten de 7 veranderingen in dit belangrijkste en meest verslavende onderdeel van Facebook voor je op een rijtje. Wat mag je als een marketeer absoluut niet missen?
Ik heb deze blogpost samen geschreven met mijn collega Bas van Steekelenburg, social media manager bij Fresh Bridge.
1. De news feed wordt opgedeeld in contentspecifieke subfeeds
Facebook biedt de mogelijkheid om subfeeds te gebruiken voor o.a. foto’s, muziek, games, groepen, merken, etc. In iedere subfeed wordt dus uitsluitend content weergegeven die linkt naar het filteronderwerp. Alle merkcontent komt standaard terecht in de subfeed 'following’, en bij relevantie (lees veel interactie) komt deze ook in de hoofd-news feed, namelijk ‘nieuwsoverzicht’. Facebook zegt hierover:
“Thanks to a new “Following” feed on the right-hand side of the home page, people will be able to discover more content from the Pages they like and the people they follow.”
2. De subfeed ‘Friends Only’ kan het bereik van merken terugdringen
De subfeed ‘Friends Only’ kan ingrijpende veranderingen in het Facebook-gebruik met zich meebrengen. Zoals de naam doet vermoeden zijn er geen contentposts van bedrijven te vinden. Ook is het waarschijnlijk dat de activiteiten van vrienden met bedrijven eruit zal worden gefilterd. Simpele acties zoals het liken van een relevant bericht zullen hier worden weergegeven, terwijl deze nu minder vaak worden weergegeven in de news feed.
Deze ‘Friends Only’ kan er voor zorgen dat bij te veel irrelevante berichten in het ‘nieuwsoverzicht’, gebruikers zullen overschakelen in hun dagelijkse Facebook-gebruik naar ‘Friends Only’. Dit zou een probleem kunnen zijn voor merken, omdat hiermee het bereik van posts flink kan afnemen. Als merk ben je dus nog meer afhankelijk van de kwaliteit en relevantie van de berichten van andere merken en bedrijven.
3. De news feed wordt visueler
Posts in de news feed krijgen grotere afbeeldingen. Ook de deelname van vrienden in games, evenementen, video’s, plaatsen, etc. worden visueler weergegeven. Een jaar geleden was de news feed 30% visueel, nu zal dat bijna 50% zijn. Dit is enerzijds een kans: met de toegenomen grootte van visuals kan je meer aandacht vragen voor je boodschap. Anderzijds kan het toenemend besef van de importantie van visualiteit bij andere merken ervoor zorgen dat je content heftigere concurrentie krijgt.
4. De coverphoto wordt nog meer je visitekaartje
De coverphoto (de afbeelding bovenaan een Page) wordt weergegeven in de news feed wanneer mensen interactie hebben met een merk. Dit betekent dat het cruciaal is om een sterke coverphoto te hebben om nieuwe fans te acquireren. Facebook zegt hierover:
“Having an engaging cover photo that tells your or your Page’s story is even more important to improve your discovery through connection stories.”
Ook de coverphoto van merken & mensen zal worden weergegeven in de news feed wanneer mensen zich met hen verbinden.
5. Grotere sociale context bij advertenties
Profielfoto's van personen zullen groter worden weergegeven. Door de afbeeldingen van vrienden te vergroten tijdens het weergeven van ads, vergroot Facebook de sociale context bij deze advertenties. Dit zal een positief effect hebben op de Click-Through-Rate(CTR) van ads.

6. Advertenties worden visueler
De verschillende soorten ads worden visueler. Hierdoor worden ads een stuk prominenter weergegeven. Dit heeft een positief effect op de CTR. Het prominenter weergeven van ads zal betekenen dat de gemiddelde prijs voor ads flink zal stijgen.

7. Facebook wordt consistenter
Facebook richt zich bij ontwikkelingen eerst op mobiele apparaten en daarna pas op andere. Dit impliceert dat de verschillen tussen de Facebook versies op computers, tablets en smartphones kleiner worden.
De afbeelding op de computer wordt bijna niet meer aan de zijkanten afgesneden bij weergave op tablet en smartphone.

Ik hoop dat met deze nieuwe opzet de Facebook apps op mobiel beschikbaar zijn. Of komen deze helemaal te vervalen?

Het verhogen van de CTR heeft toch juist als gevolg dat de gemiddelde klikprijs daalt? Ceteris paribus komt meer advertentieruimte vrij door het hoge klikratio. Meer ruimte = daling klikprijs. Of mis ik nu iets?
Eens met Jurjen: een hogere CTR zal meer revenue voor Facebook betekenen, maar hoeft toch niet te leiden tot een hogere CPA/CPC?
@Ferry – In de eigen Facebook Apps worden de wijzigingen ook doorgevoerd. Of de branded Facebook apps mobiel zijn ligt aan de merken die ze laten ontwikkelen. ‘Mobile First’ is daar nog niet goed geland.
@ Jurjen en @Wouter – Facebook maakt ook gebruik van een bid systeem waarbij advertenties tegen opbod voor de aangegeven doelgroep worden verkocht. Hierdoor wordt de prijs van de ads CPC/CPM veelal bepaald door de ‘drukte’ van andere adverteerders op de doelgroep voor die specifiek ads. Hogere CTR zal in eerste instantie meer effectiviteit voor de adverteerder betekenen. Meer adverteerders zullen de prijs van CPC/CPM omhoog duwen.
@Roderick: Ik vind het erg voorbarig om uit te gaan van een hogere effectiviteit van de nieuwe facebook ads (branding/exposure buiten beschouwing gelaten). Voor er een flinke stijging in de cpc plaats vindt, zal de effectiviteit voor de adverteerder relatief méér moeten stijgen dan de ctr.
Daarnaast blijft de intentie van de Facebook gebruiker hetzelfde. Facebook maakt plaats voor nieuwe adverteerders en gaat weer knallen in omzet 🙂
@Jurjen De effectiviteit moet zich nog bewijzen. Dat is nu nog een aanname. Eens dat Facebook weer gaat knallen. 😉

Bij welke interacties wordt de coverphoto van je Page precies allemaal weergegeven in de news feed?
@Raoul Voor zowel organische als betaalde Page Like stories wordt de coverphoto van brands etc. weergegeven. Hiermee geeft Facebook meer context aan de Page.
Wanneer een Facebook vriend van je een nieuwe vriend heeft, zal ook de coverphoto zichtbaar zijn.

De news feed wordt niet opgedeeld in contentspecifieke subfeeds. De newsfeed wordt aangevuld met aparte content-specifieke feeds. De opbouw van de oorspronkelijke newsfeed blijft exact hetzelfde, dus met de meest relevante content van alle subcategorieen.
Quote van ons Facebook contact: “The algorithm of the Newsfeed in itself is not changing, also all the published content and OG actions are in the Newsfeed as usual. “
De extra feeds zijn enkel verruimingen van de content in bepaalde categorieen en hebben nul invloed op hoe je content in de hoofdfeed boven water komt. De oorspronkelijke newsfeed is ook je default feed, dus dat blijft je eerste contact moment op het moment dat je FB bezoekt.
Punt 2, waarin je aangeeft dat de Friends Only feed het bereik van merken terugdringt lijkt me dan ook incorrect: De oorspronkelijke newsfeed laat die interactie nog steeds zien. De interactie van vrienden met bedrijven wordt er vervolgens in de Friends Only feed deels uitgefilterd: Likes en comments worden niet meer getoond, maar het bewust sharen van content van een pagina is nog steeds zichtbaar. Het liken van een relevant bericht wordt pertinent NIET getoond in de Friends Only feed.
Punt 4, waarin je aangeeft dat je coverfoto nog meer je visite kaartje wordt is al live en heeft niets met de nieuwe newsfeed te maken. Als je nu vrienden (of pagina’s) toevoegd wordt de coverfoto daarbij getoond in de newsfeed, exact zoals in je screenshot te zien is.
Punt 6, waarin je aangeeft dat Advertenties visueler worden is deels waar: Sponsored stories en offers zijn iets zichtbaarder, maar dit is een fractie van de totale inventory van Facebook. De bulk van de views wordt nog steeds gegenereerd door de unites aan de rechterzijde, waar niets aan verandert. Daarnaast is CTR geen factor bij de prijsbepaling van Offers: Die betaal je CPM.
Weet iemand wat nu de nieuwe fotoformaten zijn voor de nieuwe nieuwsfeed? Of iemand een idee waar ik die kan vinden?
Coverphoto / wall posts / maar ook de afbeelding van advertenties ?
Coverphoto is hetzelfde formaat, Wall posts worden geresized dus maakt in principe niet uit (groter = beter), formaat van afbeeldingen in advertenties wordt niet aangepast.

Wat je als marketeer ook niet mag missen is dat Facebook nog zo bezig is met zoeken naar manieren om meer inkomsten te genereren dat het de gewone gebruikers uit het oog dreigt te verliezen. De adverteerders lijken de primaire doelgroep te worden en dat kan niet goed gaan. Dit fenomeen in combinatie met het feit dat jongeren op zoek zullen gaan naar alternatieven omdat hun ouders, grootouders en leraren ook op FB zitten betekent dat je als marketeer goed in de gaten moet houden of er geen alternatieve sociale netwerken aan het opkomen zijn.
Dergelijke verschuivingen kunnen snel gaan. Kijk maar naar de Telegraaf die vorig jaar 27 miljoen heeft moeten afschrijven op Hyves.
