For their part, emerging markets seem to be quickly finding that social networks offer yet another opportunity to leapfrog the competition in the developed markets. In some cases, inefficient, unreliable or monitored email systems are foresaken in preference of the faster and more consistent social network channels. In others, a lack of alternatives may be driving businesses to adopt social networks within the enterprise.”

Retailsector meest actief

“On the one hand, social networks tend to be consumer-focused and therefore provide a cost- effecitve marketing channel. But they also enable retailers and wholesalers to capture a rich source of customer information to better direct their product development and planning”, aldus het rapport van KPMG.

Doelen

“We see critical differences in how people in different countries are using social media. What it means: Brands trying to leverage their social programs globally should beware: a cookie cutter approach won’t work; strong localization of those programs is necessary. Highlights from the Forrester data:

    · Emerging markets are in love with social media. At least 93% of online consumers in emerging markets like India, China, Mexico and Brazil are using social media. More importantly, they are active creators of content: more than three-quarters of respondents in metropolitan China and India are producing and publishing social content – compared with just 24% in the US.

    · Social media users in the West prefer to consume rather than create. North American and European consumers have a much more passive attitude toward social media – more than 70% of them are what we call “spectators.” And while two-thirds of consumers in emerging markets update their status at least weekly, only one-third of Americans and one-quarter of Europeans do so.

    · There’s no single picture of a European social media user. About half of online consumers in the EU-7 visit social networking sites at least monthly, but the average varies widely from country to country. Italians and Swedes are twice as likely as Germans to use social networking sites like Facebook on a regular basis. And when it comes to creating social content, Italians lead the way with an adoption rate nearly double that of consumers in France, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands.”
