Waarom Yahoo! Buzz het wél gaat maken

{title}‘The buzz can be about anything – a great story on a major news site, an extraordinary bit from an obscure site, an intriguing video, or a fantastic blog that shouldn’t be missed.’

Sinds 26 februari (hier op Valleywag: ‘Screenshots of Yahoo Buzz, a Digg competitor’).

Op Mashable schreven ze half februari: ‘Yahoo Buzz: Upcoming Competitor to Digg or Google?’ Met de vijandige overname-adem van Microsoft in de nek lanceert Yahoo! voortdurend nieuwe producten (‘The pace of of product launches from Yahoo is breathless’ schrijft Valleywag). Yahoo! Daarbij legt Buzz het behoorlijk af (zie ook Mashable, twee weken later: ‘Yahoo Buzz – Absolutely No Threat to Digg’)

Dat is zelfs onterecht, vindt Muhammed Saleem: ‘I’ve written a guest post at read/writeweb (‘Why Yahoo! Buzz is a Brilliant Idea’, MvdB) on Yahoo! Buzz. This will probably be the first and (for now) the only positive piece about the site that you will read.’

‘While many people think that the flurry of recent launches from Yahoo! represent nothing more than a cry of desperation, I think Yahoo! Buzz, at least, sets itself apart from the rest.’

‘While socially driven news is ultimately an evolution of social bookmarking, the latter has evolved to the point where the two concepts can live largely independent of each other’. Buzz?

Saleem vindt het ‘a factor that is unique to Yahoo! Buzz.’

2 Yahoo! Buzz is heus wél sociaal

Yahoo! Heel sociaal: ‘People can still buzz (vote for) stories they like, from the pool that has been preselected for them.’ Saleem: ‘The site is a solid half-way point between traditional media and new media. The sources are limited and largely mainstream, but what’s popular is in the hands of the people.’

3 Alleen publishers mogen meedoen

Want, schrijft Saleem: ‘Yahoo! Buzz only allows sites that are a part of the Yahoo! Publisher Network (i.e. sites that run Yahoo! text ads alongside their content) to be included in the index of content users can vote on.’

Hij heeft het over ‘the smartest move Yahoo! could have made’. Huh? ‘Reports suggest that, in tests, links to Wired.com received over 2 million unique hits in 2 hours.’

As soon as the site is taking applications (I’m not sure how the inclusion process will end up working), you can bet that every site out there will want a piece of the Buzz and niche content wont be hard to find at all.’

Yahoo Publishing Network

Saleem schrijft: ‘Yahoo! gets a piece of the advertising revenue pie. Not only does this increase the conversions for Yahoo! Publisher Network, but it also increases the revenue per conversion for Yahoo!. In essence, they’re getting their ads on the sites and then creating traffic for the same sites.’

Digg-kloon? Reacties

Een van de reacties op Readwriteweb: ‘It is always a mistake to compare a mainstream media property like Yahoo! with Digg. The user base and their expectations are totally different. I think Yahoo have implemented a nice mix of some of the best elements of social news with the expectations of their user base. Compare that with what AOL did with Netscape and then had to reverse it out 18 months later (after losing 80% of their user base).’

Een tweede, over de vergelijking met Digg: ‘Yahoo Buzz isn’t a threat to Digg, because it’s built for the masses. And, as you hint, it’s actually perfect for the masses. It’s focused on traditional news, entertainment, and sports. It won’t be dominated by linux dorks or Paul-tards. It can’t be gamed by a small horde of myopic dweebs.’

Kritiek op Mashable: ‘All in all, I’m afraid that Buzz is just Yahoo catching up with the times; there’s little innovation or novelty here. Long time fans of Yahoo services (there is such a thing, right?) will appreciate the fact that they can sign in with their Yahoo ID, and some will like the simplicity of the interface. Other than that, it’s move along, nothing to see here.’
