Strategy Analytics estimates that the number of advanced game console users worldwide grew by 129% last year totaling 56.3 million by the end of 2002. Strategy estimates that this total will rise by 58% this year to 89 million by the end of the year. Strategy also notes that 75% of these advanced game console users have Sony’s PlayStation 2, 13% have Nintendo’s GameCube and the remaining 12% have Microsoft’s Xbox.
Game consoles have indeed risen in popularity. As NPD Techworld determined in January 2003, console game sales rose by $9 million between 2001 and 2002 while computer game sales declined by $35 million during the same time period.
